Janis Laurs (2004)

Janis Laurs, painting by Sam GoldingOil on canvas
150 x 122 cm, shaped stretcher

Janis is a principal cellist with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra who I first drew in concert, then in person when he agreed to sit for this portrait which was entered in the Archibald Prize.

The work begins with drawings, from which the painting and the painting shape is derived, with the convex base forming a stage like platform for the figure to inhabit and perform in.
