Across Tidal River

I was reading a text on cubism at Wilson’s Prom and took some inspiration from its concepts in this work:

Steam Tug Yelta and exhibition – The Paper Figurehead

Sam Golding – The Paper Figurehead

It is fitting that a ship drawing is used as an emblem for this exhibition.

I chose The Paper Figurehead as the title for this exhibition for two reasons, the literal one being that there are drawings of ships figureheads.

The second is that the concept of ship figureheads leading off on voyages of exploration and what is seen on the voyage is a metaphor for the exploration of visual ideas in drawings and of leading from drawings to painting.  The group of works is primarily works on paper with some paintings associated with and developed from them.

Fishpond

At ANU Fishpond, I sat down and drew the fish.  It is interesting to float a wash over a page in this way, and framing turns the images into little fish tanks. There is a very Chinese feel to this, probably derived from travelling to China in 2008.
