Blue Bijinga

Blue Bijinga, painting by Sam GoldingOil on linen
86 x 84 cm, shaped stretcher

The figure juts into the picture space compositionally, and with a shaped canvas is cupped by the form. The hand curves into the frontal surface elegantly.

The overpatterned colour is typical of the original and is explored in this reinterpretation, as the mode of expression of patterned cloth by filling a form with pattern is more usually explored tonally in western art.

The brilliant blue ground is used to make the image opalesce in contrast to the ground.
