a languid Guest

my archibald entry of 2010 was a portrait of the Hon. Paul Guest QC, a retired Family Court Judge and a three time olympian.  The image is of him seated in a chair with a languid physical presence.  That’s the subject laid out.  The surface of the painting is highly worked in textured paint, overlayering and then glazed to emphasise surface and unite the whole.  It didn’t make the Archibald short list but was shown in the “Hidden Faces of the Archibald” exhibition in 2010.  Here’s a photo from the exhibition of subject with painting, which I feel shows the key aspect of a portrait, resemblance is there.  It is also a thoroughly modernist painting in execution with the emphasis on forms and surface.
