Two Figs and two art works

This post is about moving from drawing to painting using an example.

I did a still life drawing of two figs on a plate, with ink and watercolour.  it is tightly cropped to dimension the space, similar to the cropping used in Ukiyo-e prints.

This has then been worked up into a small oil in a rectangular format, with greater emphasis on the colour fields than detail.

A still life

This is a still life I did over ten years ago, in oils and glaze on canvas.  The space is created in an interesting way and the volumes are flattened back to the surface with the red field of “tablecloth”.

Xmas card 2016

I thought you’d like to see this year’s card, with a large amount of pasted paper (a cubist technique with the lovely name of papier colle) and ink and wash. The photo is a bit washed as the original has more intense colour.
