Lasallian Foundation Fine Art Auction 2012

I donated a drawing “Bicheno storm front” 2009 to this worthy cause. The foundation seeks to aid children in impoverished circumstances.

 

Bicheno Storm Front

This watercolour was painted on a family holiday to Bicheno on the Tasmanian coast, from the holiday house with a vista taking in the coast and hills. The rain clouds rolling in across the sea intersect the vertical of the coast and the hills in the composition. The contrast of light with shadow and the conflict of sea and land allow colour to be liberally used to give a sense of this majestic place.

The auction, held at the Menzies Gallery in South Yarra at 3.30pm on Sunday 26 August 2012, is an opportunity to purchase affordable works from established and emerging Australian artists.

POSTSCRIPT 2013 – as I have looked back at this I decided I wanted to develop a painting from this image in a mode abstract mode.  As it is nearly done I thought a shot on the easel would be fun:

Pining away…

I saw a Norfolk pine out the window when staying in Sydney a while back and was taken with its form and the lines developing from that in the drawing.

From there I went to a painting and the underpainting went on:

and then I layered some paint on, then glaze.

At the finishing post…

 The horse racing painting has been finished and is drying now.  I like the way the wrap around makes a difference to the perception of the overall form of the canvas.

A key differential has been established between the turf on which the horses run, and that past the finish line using wax and glaze to distinguish by sheen.

and over all, from front on it looks roughly like this

 apologies for the reflection off the image and its slight fuzziness.

POSTSCRIPT 2013 – I am reworking this now and so it is not a finished as I thought it was.
