Place des Vosges

ink and wash

A little ink and wash done in Paris.   The silhouette is contrasted with the white space of the apartment buildings below it, surrounding the cathedral.  I include it to contrast with:

I started with a conventional view of the square, a section seen from the park.  I then had an idea of representing the space as mapped or seen from the centre of the park and rotating.  I wanted to contrast the splendour of the surviving pre revolution architecture with the present day, so used newspaper to emulate the texture of the walls and to bring the ephemera of the modern into the image.  I combine pencil, cut paper, ink and wash in this image.

travels with a sketch pad

I just found some images which I drew while travelling in Europe in 2002. They are ink and wash and watercolour.  I am amused to recall the surprise of digital camera laden tourists who saw me sitting there using finest 17th century technology.
