tuning up..

I often do a preliminary study from drawings before a major work.  This one was done as a preliminary portrait before a large scale group portrait of the Flinder’s quartet, submitted for the Archibald in 2010. It is about 80 cm by 120 cm in oil on canvas, with overlaid glazes.

The final, much larger,  group portrait “Flinders Quartet in the Round” is on the Portfolio page (link at top of page).  Instead of being contained in an oval, the larger work uses an arch form to set a space as a proscenium arch, within which the quartet performs, as a visual device and as a link to performance space.
