Portrait of Karen

I painted this portrait piece of Karen, a friend’s girlfriend, in the mid 80’s.  I just found it again while unpacking and thought I’d show how my art has developed over time.

I like the geometric forms within the painting:

Not quite to the finish line…

I was working on a painting based on horse race finish photos last year and posted suggesting nearly done.  I have since reworked it twice and am still going.  The changes were dramatic and I am still unsatisfied so to set them out serially:

and then the pyjamas went on:

and I thought them a bit much like a footy jumper so muted them and cut through to layers:

and I have reworked it since so the finish line is receding.

Fleurieu Peninsula

I visited some friends beach house at Carackalinga near Adelaide a few years ago and did some sketches from which I developed this oil.  The texture is made with little scallops of built up paint laid on with a plastic picnic knife.  The image below is to show the paint surface more closely:

Flinders quartet study

I did a couple of oil sketches as preliminary studies for the Flinders Quartet portrait I  did in 2011.  I was reminded of this recently and to add to previous posts about stages in a portrait this is the sketch- at 31 cm by 41 cm (3.5cm deep) it is small:
