a languid Guest

my archibald entry of 2010 was a portrait of the Hon. Paul Guest QC, a retired Family Court Judge and a three time olympian.  The image is of him seated in a chair with a languid physical presence.  That’s the subject laid out.  The surface of the painting is highly worked in textured paint, overlayering and then glazed to emphasise surface and unite the whole.  It didn’t make the Archibald short list but was shown in the “Hidden Faces of the Archibald” exhibition in 2010.  Here’s a photo from the exhibition of subject with painting, which I feel shows the key aspect of a portrait, resemblance is there.  It is also a thoroughly modernist painting in execution with the emphasis on forms and surface.

la belle ferroniere

I read a few years ago of the sale of a purported Leonardo ,  alleged to be a version of the painting in the Louvre, held by an American which came into his family with his french war bride as a wedding present.  It had been controversially discredited by the great dealer Duveen through a photograph, and much later by scientific dating techniques but was still an old painting replicating Leonardo, not a modern fake http://www.italian-renaissance-art.com/La-Belle-Ferroniere.html.  I was interested in how Duveen visually identified that it was not by Leonardo from a photograph. While this post starts with a bit of history it is still about how a work came about.

Assuming Duveen to know the Louvre’s painting I did a large watercolour study from a web image, and one from the study in the USA.

and then of the later version:

at this stage I thought that the opinion of Duveen was right from the subtle colour use and delicacy of modelling seen in the Louvre version but I still wanted a tighter comparison so took it a step further with a cutter blade…

in the process of direct comparison....

and continued to work on it until the images meshed (as I could not leave it so conventionally), to arrive at the composite thus:

Hazards, Freycinet 2009

The painting in the portfolio is of the range of the hazards on the Freycinet peninsula in Tasmania.  It is based on a small watercolour and ink drawing (above) I did from the lookout point to wineglass bay across to the rocks of the Hazards.  In terms of process, the drawing leads into the painting and I am not a pleinair painter as such.  With such big canvasses I have an image of me attempting  to paint out doors and the wind taking me off on a Mary Poppins adventure beneath the canvas.

Eclair (ink, watercolour and pastel) 1995

We had a lovely cat, Eclair, who was a black long hair stray with a coat that went chocolate in the sun.  Cats are very dificult to draw as there are not the crisp edges you get used to in life drawing and the modelling is difficult.  But a subject is there to draw and sepia ink is lovely
